In an effort to raise awareness about censorship and to promote the free exchage of ideas, on September 23, 2006, the ACLU Foundation of Texas will release its annual report, "Free People Speak Freely," outlining the ACLU of Texas Banned Books Project which tracks contested, and in some cases, banned literature in Texas' public schools.

Local ACLU chapters host readings in bookstores and libraries, and the Central Texas chapter will bring in community leaders, educators, authors, musicians, slam poets and more to read short selections from the "scandalous" books that made the list.
